Chapter 134: Brother-in-law, You Are the Best!
The ultimate consequence of Xue Tian'ai’s crude jokes was being mercilessly berated by the three women with a barrage of unflattering descriptions. Xue felt rather sullen about it; he thought it was just a joke—was it really necessary to tear him apart like that?
What frustrated him even more was that because they had spent too much time at the executive restaurant during lunch, the three women hadn't finished their work for the day, and they ended up blaming that on him as well. They claimed that if not for his motor-mouthed, suggestive jokes, they would have certainly finished their tasks. Xue felt like crying—it was clearly their own fault for taking such a long lunch, yet the blame was dumped squarely on his shoulders.
When Xue tried to vent his frustration, he was met with an utterly unreasonable counterattack: they argued that if he hadn't forgotten to prepare three bento boxes, they wouldn't have spent so much time waiting for him to cook. In the end, no matter what, it was always Xue’s fault.
Xue was left in a state of utter confusion. What was this? A privilege of womanhood? Alas, the world is fickle. The status of Chinese men has plummeted so much in recent years! No wonder the "son-in-law" genre is so popular these days—it reflects the current reality of Chinese men being "exploited and oppressed." After being "bullied" for so long, of course people want to read stories about counter-attacks and face-slapping! Xue even considered for a moment whether he should break his contract and run off to another book to be the protagonist.
Consequently, Xue spent the entire afternoon in a foul mood. Even obtaining the character information he wanted from Shinomiya Enyue couldn't lift his spirits.
When it was finally time to get off work and most people had left, Xue insisted firmly that Qin Mengxue give up on working overtime and head home. She eventually agreed, and after driving away from the Menghua Group, they headed home with a sullen Xue in the passenger seat.
Once they arrived, Qin Mengxue didn't tease Xue about his embarrassing behavior at the office. After a quick dinner, she disappeared into the study of Villa No. 3 to work. For her, it was always better to finish today's business today.
Xue was relegated to the kitchen to clean the dishes. Just as he was washing up with a "deep-seated grudge," Cen An'an tiptoed into the kitchen and sidled up to him. "Brother-in-law, Brother-in-law..."
"Hmm? Oh, it’s An'an. What’s up?"
"Um, Brother-in-law, are you busy right now?" Cen An'an asked, tugging at his sleeve with her small hand.
"Hmm? No, I'm free... why do you ask?" Xue turned around, drying his hands as he looked at his sister-in-law.
"Are you busy later, Brother-in-law?" she asked, looking up at him with anticipation.
"I’m free. If you need something, just say it. What’s going on?" Xue was a bit bewildered. What could this girl possibly want?
"Brother-in-law, take me out to play later, will you? I want to go out and look around..." Cen An'an blinked her bright, large eyes at him incessantly.
"But it’s getting late, isn't it? You still want to go out this late?"
"Yes, please... but I'm a little scared to go alone. That's why I came to find you, Brother-in-law..." She continued to act cute.
"Hold on, let me ask you something first..." Sensing that something was off, Xue had to press further. "Don't tell me your sister forbade you from going out tonight, so you came to me instead?"
Upon hearing this, Cen An'an’s expression turned awkward. She looked away. "H-how... c-could that be? I'm a college student now. How could my sister not let me go out at night?"
Xue couldn't help but sigh. "An'an, could you not make it so obvious when you're lying?"
"Oh, come on, best brother-in-law! Just take me out!" Having been found out, she resorted to acting like a spoiled child, shaking his arm with both hands.
"Aren't you afraid your sister will dismantle me?" Xue was speechless.
"Not at all... My sister probably only keeps me in at night because she's worried about my safety. If you're with me, there’s absolutely nothing to worry about! Besides, you're a great fighter and the young master of the Xue family—even if something happens, you can handle it, right?" Her logic was surprisingly sound.
There wasn't really anything wrong with her reasoning; as long as they didn't run into anything as troublesome as an SS-rank bounty, Xue could certainly keep her safe. But his sister-in-law’s thought process was truly bizarre.
Seeing him still hesitating, she softened her voice to a whiny, childlike tone. "Brother-in-law, please keep me company! I haven't been out at night in ages. Just take me out..."
She was a real little enchantress. Xue realized he was basically defenseless against this kind of behavior. He had no resistance to Ye Hairuo’s coquettishness as a child, and in Europe, Shinomiya Enyue always got her way. Now that he was back in China, he had such a persistent sister-in-law. Was the author doing this on purpose?
"Fine, fine. Let me go ask your sister to come along. That should be fine, right?" Xue sighed, figuring a simple outing wouldn't be a big deal. He dried his hands and turned to go upstairs.
Cen An'an’s expression tightened immediately. She grabbed him. "Brother-in-law, isn't my sister busy right now? Let's not disturb her; let her work in peace..."
"And as her assistant, you know she’s a total workaholic when she's in the zone. She hates being interrupted. If you go bother her now... I think both of us will be finished," she said, putting on an expression of deep concern for his well-being.
"Hmm..." Xue paused, struck by the truth of her words. Qin Mengxue’s temper truly wasn't the best when she was working. Recalling the lingering bite marks on his body, he couldn't help but twitch his mouth. He stopped in his tracks and nodded. "You have a point..."
"See?" Cen An'an let out a sigh of relief.
"But An'an, why do you suddenly want me to take you out?" Xue wasn't stupid; he could tell she didn't want Qin Mengxue to know about this. He couldn't help but be curious. Had she transferred schools and taken a liking to some boy, but was too shy to tell her sister, so she wanted him there for moral support and to vet the guy? No, that didn't make sense—the Porsche 918 he’d given her should have been enough to handle any "face" issues. His emotional intelligence was failing to grasp her motive.
"It's nothing. I just heard the nightlife in Beiyang City is quite colorful and full of beautiful people... and I see how hard you work, Brother-in-law. My sister is right next door, but you can only look and never touch. So, I thought I'd take you out to see the world and help you blow off some steam," she whispered, her bright eyes dancing as she stood on tiptoe to lean into his ear.
Xue felt a dark cloud hang over his head. How had his sister-in-law become so "bold"?
"See how good I am to you, Brother-in-law? How well I understand you and look out for you! But don't worry, even if you go astray tonight, I, Cen An'an, will turn a blind eye. I will absolutely, positively never tell my sister!" She made a vow, her little face filled with sincerity.
Xue was absolutely stunned. Was his sister-in-law actually coaching him on how to cheat on her own sister? If Qin Mengxue found out, he felt it wouldn't just be him getting "dismantled"—Cen An'an wouldn't be spared either.
However, looking at her eager, hopeful expression, his heart softened. Forget it, if the girl wanted to go have some fun, he’d just humor her. A night out shouldn't cause any real trouble.
"Alright, alright, enough of that nonsense. I'll take you wherever you want to go, but forget about that 'nightlife' talk. I’m afraid your sister would kill both of us," Xue relented.
"Yay! You're the best, Brother-in-law!" Overjoyed, she threw her arms around his neck, stood on her tiptoes, and planted a quick kiss on his cheek.
