Chapter Nineteen: The Allure of Su Chan
Luo Yu was stunned on the spot by this sudden turn of events. Once she regained her senses, she lunged forward and started grappling with Zhu Yaotang. Seeing Luo Yu take action, Luo Qiuyu, who felt she had misjudged the situation, could no longer hold back either; she took a few steps forward and also charged at Zhu Yaotang.
The entrance of the Luo family villa was now in utter chaos.
Meanwhile, Su Chan paid them no mind. She skipped over to Ye Cheng’s side and supported his mother.
Then Su Chan stuck out her tongue at Ye Cheng, pulled a funny face, and said, “How about that? With an employee like me, you’re getting a bargain. You men just don’t know how to talk—when it comes to women like her, I only need five sentences at most.”
Only now did Ye Cheng truly realize how formidable Su Chan was. Even after having been on the battlefield, he was still awed by Su Chan’s almost miraculous way of handling things.
He stood dumbfounded for a while before finally calming himself, then helped his mother into the Mercedes.
After the three of them got into the car, they no longer paid any attention to the commotion at the Luo family villa. Instead, they headed straight to the apartment Ye Cheng had rented earlier.
Once they parked in the underground garage and arrived at the spacious apartment, Ye Cheng’s mother—who had always been quiet and well-behaved—finally spoke up.
“My son, where is this place? It’s so big; we can’t possibly afford to live here. It’s all my fault—I’ve dragged you down!”
Ye Cheng’s mother had always supported her son unconditionally. As long as she was alive, she would always stand by his side. But when she saw that Ye Cheng had brought her to such a luxuriously decorated apartment, she couldn’t help but worry.
Her son had already spent so much money treating her illness—how could he possibly afford to live in such a place now?
“Mom, from now on, this is our home. And please, stop saying you’re a burden to me. You’re my mother, the person I love the most.”
“Spending money to treat your illness is what I should do. Besides, your son isn’t that penniless boy anymore—this is a place I rented myself.”
“You can just relax and live here. Once you’re better, we’ll move somewhere even bigger. One with a garden, so you can enjoy the sunshine at home.”
Ye Cheng looked at his mother’s concerned face and smiled as he explained.
“You have money now?”
“Mm, I have money now!” Ye Cheng nodded in reply.
“Did this young lady give it to you? Son, you mustn’t become a live-in son-in-law again for my sake. Over the years, I’ve seen you suffer so much, and I’ve come to understand that even if I were to die tomorrow, I couldn’t let you endure any more hardship!”
Seeing Ye Cheng’s confident response, his mother turned her gaze to Su Chan. Clearly, she attributed Ye Cheng’s sudden wealth to this girl before her.
“Her? Mom, what are you thinking? She’s poorer than anyone—how could she give me money?”
“Her name is Su Chan. She’s just a new employee I’ve hired.”
“You know I’m skilled in medicine. Today I cured a patient, and the patient’s family paid me a consultation fee.”
“The patient was wealthy, so the fee was high—a million.”
Ye Cheng didn’t tell his mother he had actually received ten million. It wasn’t that he wanted to deceive her; he was just afraid she’d be frightened by such a large sum.
Moreover, Ye Cheng knew exactly why the consultation fee had been so high. It was clear that Mr. Qin, afraid he might abandon the case after Li Wuwei was dismissed, paid the sum to show his sincerity.
“You’re skilled in medicine? But you never mentioned it before…”
As Ye Cheng and his mother spoke, Su Chan suddenly interrupted.
“Uh… I know a little, but you never asked,” Ye Cheng replied with an awkward smile.
“Well, that’s true. Then, can you take a look at my father? He’s not doing well at all.”
Su Chan’s face was filled with worry.
“Son, this girl seems like a good person—help her if you can. Besides, you haven’t thanked her properly for what she did at the Luo family’s house.”
Before Ye Cheng could reply, his mother had already agreed with a gentle, approving smile.
“Mom!” Ye Cheng was puzzled. Normally so quiet in the Luo family, today his mother had become so chatty the moment she saw Su Chan. He looked at her, bemused.
“Thank you, Auntie! You’re such a kind person.”
Seeing Ye Cheng’s mother agree, Su Chan instantly put away her worried expression, broke into a radiant smile, and ran over to take her hand, affectionately calling her “Auntie” over and over again.
This delighted Ye Cheng’s mother so much that she turned to Su Chan with satisfaction, then repeatedly told Ye Cheng, “Son, I really like Su—she’s a good girl. You should seize your chance.”
“Mom? What are you talking about?” Ye Cheng grumbled, utterly exasperated by her words.
After venting, Ye Cheng noticed it was still early. He said to his mother, “Mom, I have a thousand-year-old Polygonum multiflorum root here. The kitchen’s over there—I’ll boil it for you in a bit to nourish your health. Once you’ve had the tonic, I’ll do as you say and see Su Chan’s father. Just rest easy here.”
“Son, when are you going to finalize your divorce from the Luo family? If you have time, go take care of it soon.”
“I know. It’s getting late today, and I doubt things will calm down on their end for a while. I’ll handle it tomorrow.”
With that, Ye Cheng ignored Su Chan and headed into the kitchen to prepare the tonic for his mother.
As soon as he left, Su Chan and Ye Cheng’s mother started chatting like two friends from different generations. When Su Chan spoke of her own hardships, Ye Cheng’s mother was nearly moved to tears. And when his mother mentioned how her son had married into the Luo family for her sake, Su Chan wiped her eyes as well.
Just as Ye Cheng finished preparing the tonic, he overheard his mother promising Su Chan earnestly, “Girl, don’t worry. With me to back you up, if Ye Cheng ever bullies you, just tell me and see how I deal with him!”
Oh no, does this girl have some kind of magic? In just a few words, she’s completely won over my usually silent mother, Ye Cheng thought to himself as he approached the pair.
“Mom, the tonic’s ready. Drink it while it’s hot. Su Chan and I will head out for a bit and I’ll come back to keep you company tonight.”
With that, Ye Cheng pulled the still-animated Su Chan away from his mother and quickly left the house.
