Chapter 61: Reflection? Beware of Cambria's Sniper!
"Hold your positions, everyone hold your positions! If you charge out there now, you're just walking to your deaths!"
"Remember, our mission is to hold this town and deny the enemy any chance to repair the bridge! Only by holding our ground here can we hope to strike more blows against the enemy and avenge our kinsmen!"
Facing those walking skeletons, many grinding-toothed Cambrian soldiers could barely restrain themselves.
Seeing their restless demeanor, Andrei quickly shouted out to them, reminding them to stay calm.
He could fully understand how they felt. If it were back in the war of resistance era and he had witnessed such atrocities by the foreign invaders, he would undoubtedly have had the impulse to throw caution to the wind and charge forward.
Yet, the more critical the situation, the more they had to keep their heads; otherwise, rushing out blindly was nothing more than suicide.
Compared to the regular soldiers, the players felt very little emotional distress, aside from leaving a few comments in the chat section complaining about how wicked the Black Hawk invaders were.
However, several scout players equipped with telescopic sights hiding on high ground, as well as tank hunter players armed with anti-tank rifles, quickly aimed their weapons into the distance, preparing to take the first shot!
"Officer, what is that? Why do I feel like something in the distance is flashing in my eyes?"
A necromancer soldier who was using hand gestures to direct the skeletal troops suddenly felt as though a small searchlight in the distance was shining directly at him!
The sensation was hard to describe, akin to someone deliberately flashing a mirror right in his face—and even a mirror wouldn't have been that blinding!
"Careful, it might be a sniper!"
The mage at the rear of the unit also noticed the distant glare and spoke with uncertainty, but he immediately raised his guard.
"How is that possible? Given the backward tactics of these Cambrians, where would they even get snipers—"
*Bang!*
Before the necromancer soldier could finish his sentence, a bullet instantly tore through his skull, followed immediately by a crisp gunshot.
His head, which had been turned as he busily spoke with his comrade, suddenly exploded like a rotten watermelon smashed into red and white mist.
This single gunshot seemed to act as a prelude; several other players pulled their triggers in unison, picking off distant enemies. One necromancer soldier after another took headshots, creating a chillingly uniform spectacle.
As several headless corpses crashed heavily to the ground, the remaining advancing necromancer soldiers scrambled to drop prone or dive behind mechs, casting terrified glances toward the distance.
They found it hard to believe how that sniping shot had just been pulled off.
"Damn it! It really is a Cambrian Empire sniper! Where on earth did they get the optical instrument processing capability to forge such scopes?"
A soldier hiding behind a mech stared incredulously into the distance, still unable to accept that they had been ambushed by a sniper—and such a pinpoint accurate one at that!
They were easily seven or eight hundred meters away from the enemy, if not a full kilometer.
At such a range, hitting a target accurately was exceedingly difficult even with a scope, let alone imagining that the technologically lagging Cambrian Empire could mass-produce and issue rifle scopes!
Precision optical instruments of this caliber were subject to extremely strict export limits, and since the Cambrians lacked their own manufacturing capabilities, they had to rely entirely on imports.
Because of this, they had never anticipated that the Cambrian Empire would possess such sniper units.
They had always assumed such luxuries only existed on the desks of noble lords as exorbitant collectibles!
Had it not been for this misconception, the moment they spotted the glare, their reflexes would have kicked in instantly, preventing them from being caught completely off guard.
Who could have guessed that these bastards actually possessed scopes, yet made such a rookie mistake as to let the reflection shine so blatantly?
The Black Hawk soldiers had no idea that this glare was a special game mechanic triggered when scout players aimed through high-magnification scopes.
The higher the magnification, the more severe the crosshair sway in the game, accompanied by an increasingly obvious glint that served as a warning to enemies that they were being targeted by a scout.
Setting that drawback aside, however, the performance of the sniper scopes in the hands of players was utterly heaven-defying!
Normal soldiers had to calculate bullet drop, wind direction, and other variables when firing. Taking a shot across seven or eight hundred meters required far more than simply placing the crosshair over the enemy.
Players, on the other hand, had no need for calculations; they only needed to frame the enemy within the reticle.
Especially when firing prone while scoped in, the accuracy was terrifyingly high!
The tank hunter players also opened fire on several distant mechs. One mech appeared to miss a vital component, suffering no obvious change.
However, among the other two mechs, one suddenly flipped over onto the ground, while the other began billowing black smoke before spewing flames, clearly having had its internal ammunition detonated.
Just as the players prepared to press their advantage and take out that remaining mech in one go, the "Pacifier" mech positioned at the rear also opened up with suppressing fire.
The firepower of its four machine guns instantly formed a metallic storm, rapidly sweeping across the rooftop where the players were stationed.
Two players, too greedy for kills and slow to dodge, were instantly struck by machine gun rounds and tumbled limply behind the back of the building.
Fortunately, a medic who had been standing by rushed over and quickly used a small syringe to revive both of them, bringing the unlucky pair right back to jumping and running around.
"Serves them right. Using a scope with that high of a magnification and never moving after firing a shot—did they really think the NPCs here were all idiots?"
Before moving on, the medic player unhesitatingly expressed his disdain for the two. Anyone could tell these guys were greenhorns who had just entered the game and had zero basic concept of how the NPCs functioned.
Watching the enemy soldiers instantly gunned down by the players in the distance, Andrei slapped his thigh in excitement, failing to realize that this wave of player sniping had set a terrible example for the surrounding Cambrian soldiers.
"Fire! Give it to 'em hard, boys!"
Seeing their comrades manage to take down enemies from such a vast distance, some Cambrian soldiers felt their eyes light up.
If others could shoot that accurately, why couldn't they?
Harboring such thoughts, a group of Cambrian soldiers who had been hiding in the shadows suddenly burst out and began firing their rifles into the distance, erupting into a fierce and chaotic clatter of gunfire.
"Cease fire! Idiots, put your guns away right now and relocate!"
Seeing his soldiers suddenly open fire, Major Yuri, who was commanding from another position, couldn't help cursing aloud, feeling that these rookies were truly beyond redemption.
Before his words had even finished echoing, the Pacifier mech tracking the players swung its barrels around to target this new direction, unleashing a torrent of frantic gunfire.
Numerous Cambrian soldiers lingering by the windows, too slow to withdraw, were inexplicably cut down by the sudden hail of machine gun bullets.
