Chapter 36: Internal Purge
Mary was arrogant; after all, her father was a top-tier powerhouse in Rending Moon, and she had the credentials to be haughty. She was quite rude to the subordinates, asking Mo Yu directly, "Are you an Awakened, or have you cultivated magic?"
"I am an Awakened," Mo Yu replied.
Rending Moon was primarily composed of Demon Hunters, but not exclusively. After the emergence of sequence abilities, Awakened individuals could also join. The abilities of the Awakened were diverse, and some who lacked combat capabilities would also cultivate magic for self-defense.
Mary pressed further: "What is your ability?"
"I can distinguish monsters. No matter what type they are, they cannot escape my eyes," Mo Yu answered.
The group began to whisper among themselves.
"I’ve never heard of a sequence ability like that." "Is it a new type of ability?" "If he can identify monsters, he’ll be a huge help."
The methods Demon Hunters used to detect monsters were limited. The two sides had been locked in a struggle since ancient times, with camouflage and anti-camouflage technologies constantly evolving. Any monster that managed to survive was no simple adversary.
Different monsters required different methods of identification.
Monte stood up, a sunny and cheerful young man, and said with a smile, "Welcome to the team. This operation is aimed at rooting out the monsters lurking within the school. Your ability might just be the key to our success."
Mo Yu took his seat.
The time was 9:05.
The meeting officially began, with Mary leading the presentation, assisted by Monte and Fugue.
Their plan was simple.
Under the guise of medical examinations, they would screen the students in batches. There were three methods: blood draws, hypnosis, and a new technology that involved waiting inside a special barrier to observe the barrier’s reaction.
This process was time-consuming.
There were over 3,000 students in the school; checking them all would take at least a week.
After listening, Mo Yu immediately spoke up: "I can identify them at a glance; there is no need for such trouble."
The group exchanged glances. Recalling the "Thug's" frantic and effective combat record over the past week, they ultimately decided to give it a try.
The team set off, entering the school through a small gate and arriving in front of the indoor gymnasium.
Mo Yu stopped to look around.
He felt the entire gymnasium slightly warping, as if an invisible layer was shrouding the area. He pulled Monte aside to ask about it.
The entire gymnasium was encased in a barrier.
It was a shielding barrier developed by Demon Hunters specifically for humans. Ordinary people would subconsciously ignore the area, and no sound from within would reach the outside. It was a basic skill mastered by Demon Hunters to ensure the secrecy of the battlefield.
After clarifying this, Mo Yu performed a mental rewind, cutting out the segment where he had asked the question, and followed the crowd into the gymnasium.
A large number of official personnel had already gathered there, setting up the venue. It would still take some time. After stepping inside, Mo Yu glanced at the crowd, set down his weapon case, took out a specialized silenced pistol, and began to assemble it.
The others were puzzled but remained silent, assuming he was merely checking his gear.
Monte kindly reminded him, "Thug, it’s best not to use firearms for this operation. Many monsters are sensitive to the smell of gunpowder."
Mo Yu did not answer; he simply pulled the bolt.
*Click.*
With a crisp sound, a bullet was chambered.
The group’s hearts skipped a beat as everyone turned to look.
Just as Monte was about to say something, Mo Yu raised his weapon, aimed, and fired three precise shots, blowing the heads off three staff members.
The scene descended into chaos.
A nurse screamed, and the peacekeepers drew their weapons, disengaging their safeties. Some sought cover, while others quickly occupied high vantage points.
Countless gun barrels were leveled at Mo Yu.
An officer roared, "What are you doing?!"
Mo Yu remained silent.
Soon, someone noticed something abnormal. A peacekeeper shouted, "Something is wrong with these people!"
Everyone looked at one of the doctors who had been shot. The body was convulsing, twisting irregularly like a sack filled with writhing contents. Finally, the back of the body tore open, and three basin-sized spiders crawled out and scrambled to escape.
Before they had even fled two meters, several silver spikes flew through the air, pinning them to the ground.
It was Monte who had struck.
A short spear had appeared in his hand, and his body was wreathed in a faint, hazy glow. More than a dozen slender spikes hovered in the air at the tip of his spear, rotating slowly.
The other two corpses also showed abnormalities.
One dissolved into a puddle of water and vanished.
The other began to mutate, growing feathers and sharp talons—half-human, half-bird.
Only then did everyone realize that monsters had been lurking among them, and they had been completely unaware.
Monte’s expression was grave as he shouted, "Everyone stay where you are! Anyone who acts without orders will be killed!" He then looked at Mo Yu and asked, "Are there any more monsters lurking?"
Mo Yu did not speak; he simply walked forward with his weapon.
Monte followed immediately.
Mary and the others also reacted, drawing their own spirit weapons and standing ready.
The sound of leather shoes striking the floor echoed with a sharp *clack*. The vast gymnasium was so quiet that a pin drop could be heard. Everyone looked on with terrified eyes, wary of those around them, occasionally glancing at the clown in the suit, waiting for his judgment.
*Bang!*
Another gunshot rang out.
A peacekeeper, having anticipated the move, crossed his arms to block the .50-caliber bullet. He roared, fur sprouting from his skin as his body expanded, instantly transforming into a werewolf.
Monte reacted swiftly. The short spear in his hand spun, and the dozen or so spikes flew out, tracing different trajectories in the air to instantly pierce the werewolf’s limbs, pinning it to the ground.
Mary descended from above, wielding a giant hammer, and smashed the werewolf to pieces, splattering blood across the floor.
Mo Yu continued his inspection.
After checking everyone, he finally spoke: "It is safe now."
The group let out a sigh of relief, followed by a heavy silence.
Mary, Monte, and the others looked grim.
A total of six people had been killed, all of them monsters: a doctor, a peacekeeper, logistics staff from Rending Moon, and even a high-ranking official from the academy.
The monsters had come from various organizations and institutions. It was terrible news; human society seemed to have been infiltrated like a sieve.
"Clear this up quickly and proceed with the original plan. Notify the students of every class to come in batches. We start in half an hour."
Mary issued the order, and the group moved quickly, the silence of the scene giving way to activity.
"Brother, nice work."
"Your ability is excellent, perfect, and incredibly useful."
Mary, Monte, Fugue, and the other elites gathered around, showering Mo Yu with praise. After the flattery, they dispersed to make combat preparations.
Mo Yu stood on a high platform, overlooking the scene.
Mary, Monte, and Fugue had gone to a corner. To be precise, Monte and Fugue were chasing after Mary, trying to curry favor, but Mary ignored them entirely.
After a while, Mary drove them away and remained there quietly by herself.
The opportunity had arrived.
Mo Yu prepared to probe Mary’s attitude toward "Mo Xinchou" to see if his previous performance had been effective.
He descended from the platform and approached Mary, whispering, "Can you come with me for a moment?"
"What is it? Just say it here."
Mary’s attitude was cold, but she remained polite. After witnessing Mo Yu’s ability, her initial arrogance had vanished. High-level talent was welcome anywhere; she knew exactly how valuable this monster-detection ability was.
Mo Yu whispered, "Mo Xinchou."
Mary’s expression changed to one of shock, her pupils contracting. She opened her mouth as if to say something.
Mo Yu made a gesture for silence and pointed toward the door. She nodded quickly and followed him out.
