Chapter 53: Beginners Truly Lack Experience
While Liu Yunxi was complaining, bulges were already beginning to form on the metal door. Even for a mansion built for the wealthy, given the steel production standards of this era, the door could not be all that sturdy. Under such violent and heavy impacts, it was unlikely to hold out for much longer.
Seeing this, Feng Xue’s brain began to race at top speed. Running away was out of the question in the current situation, and it was doubtful that any of the doors inside the house could withstand this kind of force.
"Let's risk it!" Feng Xue gritted his teeth. That reckless determination that had driven him to gamble on transmigrating surged up once again. He took out the jade seal and channeled his mana into it, causing Mo Ying to immediately drift out from the scroll hanging in the bedroom.
"I’ll infuse you with some mana. Go into the county town and find someone to save us! Shout the moment you see a martial arts school or a rice shop, and tell them to find the martial arts masters or the county magistrate. If you truly can't find anyone, just run along the streets shouting that there are zombies or something! But remember to fly high so people don't mistake you for an evil ghost and exterminate you!"
Before she even had a chance to speak, Mo Ying was hit by this rapid-fire torrent of instructions from Feng Xue. Her reaction, however, was not slow. Sensing the mana pouring into her body, she nodded and flew straight out through the roof.
Seeing that Mo Ying had taken action without requiring him to waste any more breath, Feng Xue couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief. He then pulled out a jade tablet engraved with the character for [Gold] and rushed toward the door. Pouring his abundant mana into the tablet, he funneled a pale golden radiance straight into the heavy door all at once.
"Take this and press it against the door. It should hold out a bit longer!"
Feng Xue shoved the jade tablet into Liu Yunxi's hand and immediately began retrieving incense, candles, and an altar table from his storage bag. While maintaining the supply of mana to the jade tablet, he hurriedly set up a makeshift ritual altar close by.
As he worked, he didn't forget to ask:
"What is the exact situation right now? Didn't you say there was a zombie and a ghost? Where is the ghost? It hasn't already gotten inside the house, has it? And how on earth did you manage to make a zombie stubbornly stand here knocking on the door like this?"
"Of course because I tied it up!" Liu Yunxi clutched the jade tablet engraved with the [Golden Body Incantation], immediately feeling the immense pressure lessen. While maintaining her bracing stance against the door, she retorted:
"Did you think I was standing here just to prop up a door? Didn't you see the dog leash in my hand? You'd better hurry up and think of a way, though. I'm just a little spirit with three years of cultivation, and I can't hold out for much longer!"
Hearing this, Feng Xue finally looked over his shoulder and saw the tightly taut, moonlight-soft, pearl-white rope in Liu Yunxi's hand.
Not entirely understanding what she meant, he simply took two steps toward the window closest to the door. Utilizing his over-the-shoulder perspective ability—which allowed his field of vision to extend up to two meters away from his physical body—he poked his sight out through the window. Right away, he beheld an utterly surreal and bizarre scene:
A zombie dressed in classic imperial court official robes was standing right at the doorstep, vigorously lashing out with its sharp claws against the golden-glowing door. Perched upon its shoulders was a female head—complete with neck and half a collarbone—glaring malevolently at the door. That pair of crimson eyes was enough to make anyone shudder just from a single glance.
What was truly conspicuous, however, was the white rope of light extending from behind the door. Wrapped around the necks of both the zombie and the red-eyed fierce ghost like a couple's scarf, it truly functioned like a dog leash, restricting the movements of both the zombie and the ghost.
Unfortunately, judging by how every movement of the zombie twitched the rope of light, ghostly or demonic power seemed to have a limited binding effect on a physical zombie. It was only because the ghost was tethered to it that the zombie was unable to leave the doorway.
Having figured this out, Feng Xue relaxed just a fraction. At the very least, no major catastrophe would happen immediately.
Casually grabbing an iron rod from beside the wall—initially kept there as a precaution against thieves—he placed it before the altar. Channeling mana into a jade tablet engraved with the character for [Slashing], a silver-white radiance scraped across the iron rod with a faint sound as it poured inside. Meanwhile, Feng Xue meticulously controlled his mana, utilizing two candlesticks for calibration to seal the evil-slaying mana of the [Ghost-Slaying Incantation] directly into the iron rod.
Just like the seal he had tested earlier, when an enchantment designed to last for months was secondarily transferred to another object, its duration would plummet to a count of seconds. Therefore, while Feng Xue’s trick of transforming mana using jade artifacts worked well enough when the jade was used on its own, actually using it to empower other objects required an additional casting of the Enchantment Incantation to stabilize the spell. Had it not been for this, Feng Xue wouldn't have needed to continuously supply energy to the [Golden Body Incantation] jade tablet just to maintain the solid state of the door panels.
Of course, in a situation like this, directly locking the [Enchantment] would easily apply a protective outer film. Though inferior to a direct enchantment, it could still prevent the internal mana from dissipating too quickly. However, Feng Xue completely dared not unlock his lifespan restriction at the moment, so he had no choice but to rely on his half-baked self-taught enchantment incantation for reinforcement. Fortunately, after these days of training, his independent enchantments could last for around ten minutes, which posed no problem for a short battle.
With a weapon capable of combating the enemy now secured, Feng Xue grabbed two jade tablets engraved with the character for [Speed] and shoved them into his shoes. There was no need to specifically enchant something like the divine mobility technique; when running for your life, just flooding your shoes with mana all at once did the trick.
With these thorough preparations complete, Feng Xue finally diverted his mana back to reinforcing the Golden Body Incantation spell on the door.
Seeing this, Liu Yunxi instead grew anxious and hastily yelled:
"What's the use of you reinforcing the door? Right now it's only knocking because I've got it tied up. Once my demonic qi runs out, it's definitely going to break in from somewhere else!"
"That's why I haven't used..." Before Feng Xue could finish his sentence, he saw the pearly-white radiance on Liu Yunxi's body begin to dim and flicker. His eyes widened in an instant—
"Are you serious?"
"That's why I asked who made you drain me! Right now I only have three years of cultivation. Suppressing a red-eyed fierce ghost is fine, but add a century-old corpse to the mix, and I honestly can't hold on!"
Liu Yunxi even spoke with a hint of gloating amusement at this point, possessing an attitude that suggested she didn't even care about her own life.
Feng Xue had long since grown accustomed to her saying one thing while doing another. If she had truly wanted him dead, she wouldn't be standing here blocking the door.
So...
"Here, take this!"
"Eh?" Liu Yunxi stared blankly for a second at the "flashing silver rod" shoved into her hands by Feng Xue. Feng Xue rolled his eyes and said:
"I can't fight! You have such great strength and a life-bound magic treasure for self-protection, so naturally you have to take the front line! Keep holding that jade tablet too; I'll continuously cast the Golden Body Incantation on you. At the very least, it can turn the hand holding that tablet into a shield!"
"Who made me owe you one!" Liu Yunxi sighed, shaking her head helplessly. She reached out and took the iron rod, which felt rather scalding hot even to her, and turned back to say:
"Say the word when you're ready, and I'll open the door immediately."
"Alright, let me top off my mana first."
"Don't..."
Before Liu Yunxi had time to stop him, a surge of vital energy drifted out from Feng Xue's body. His already sated spirit soul took a ravenous gulp of the vital energy, causing a rain of mana to instantly pour down within his spiritual platform and sea of consciousness, converging into streams. A beat too slow, Feng Xue finally asked:
"What did you say not to..."
"Too late!" Liu Yunxi sighed. Just then, a piercing soprano shriek exploded from outside the door, and the entire house seemed to sway.
The ethereal rope of demonic energy, which had already been flickering in and out of existence, snapped completely on the spot. At the same time, the stray vital energy drifting around the room vanished without a trace in an instant, as if encountering a water pump.
"..." Feng Xue was in no doubt about the stupidity of the move he had just pulled. He opened his mouth to speak, but Liu Yunxi had already darted swiftly in front of him. In the next instant, accompanied by the sound of shattering glass, a figure smashed straight into the room!
